Synopsis
Jonas Obi and his wife Matilda are blessed with three lovely daughters, Amanda, Belinda and Cassandra. Jonas, a banker paints the picture of the perfect husband and loving father, However, beneath the facade of the seemingly happy home us the turmoil of Jonas' inner desire for a male child.
This desire is further fueled by the persistent nagging of his mother who wants her only son to sire an heir that will continue the family name. With this in mind, Jonas looked forward with great expectation to the delivery of the fourth child as his wife Matilda was already in the last stages of her third trimester and fast approaching her delivery date. Ultrasound scan indicated that a boy was on the way and the couple prepared earnestly for his arrival. Jonas hopes were dashed however, as his wife gave birth to another girl christened Daniella
While still trying to come to terms with his disappointment and his mother's nagging, Jonas loses his job and the pressure becomes too much to bear as he can no longer cater for his family. He decides to use his still valid visa to leave the country, just to get away from the pressure. He leaves a note for Matilda stating that he will be back after a while. A 'while' soon stretches into 18 long years without any contact.
'Girls Only' tells the tale of Amanda, Belinda, Cassandra and Daniella as they battle in their own different ways with the suppressed feelings of rejection that their father's departure created 18 years before. The story highlights the discrimination and rejection that the girl child faces in the African society and how it can create a lifelong effect on their development and social integration
